Old People Pastimes (That Are Suddenly Cool)

Bingo

If you’re looking to have a good time, it’s reasonable to assume you won’t be asking advice from your grandparents. Being hip young twenty-somethings, we know that the elderly have nothing really to offer us except repeated demands to get off their lawn.

And yet lately something has been changing in the air. Maybe it’s a nostalgic yearning for a simpler time. Maybe it’s the millennials rebelling against the try-hard rock and roll ideals of the baby boomers. Maybe it’s that the word “wireless” has suddenly found its way back into our common vernacular again.

Whatever the reason, suddenly the pastimes of our grandparents have suddenly taken on a whole new appeal. Pastimes such as:

Cream Tea

Yes, you can keep you sushi, or your wine bars or your restaurant where you eat raw meat off the back of a young woman. The real dining experience everyone is into now is a cup of Earl Grey or Breakfast Tea, served with a fruit scone, some clotted cream and a helping of strawberry or blackcurrant jam.

Maybe it just seems like the next place to go after the last decade’s love affair with cupcakes died down, but suddenly there are tea rooms opening all over the place, and there simply aren’t enough old ladies to fill all of them.

Knitting

Knitting is something we expect grannies to do in rocking chairs while kittens play with balls of yarn around their feet. However with the advent of trends like “Stitch ’n’ Bitch” and Pinterest pages and Etsy stores popping up as people rediscover crafts and the joy of making things.

Everyone from movie starts to counter-cultural hipsters are getting in on the act, as people rebel against the mass produced and artificial products we’re forced to consume everywhere else, and you have to admit that sitting alone with a half made scarf somehow looks so much better than sitting on your own poking your iPhone.

Bingo

When you think of bingo you imagine rows upon rows of old people looking at cards while a man in a sequin jacket reads out nonsense phrases like “Two fat ladies”. But the demographics are changing. According to GamCare, a provider of information, support an counseling for the prevention and treatment of gambling problems, more young people are playing bingo than ever before.

In 2008/2009 a study showed 1% of 26-35 year olds had played bingo. By 2009/2010, 4% were playing the game, and those numbers are still increasing. However, despite its popularity (or maybe because of it) Bingo is rarely a problem game for most players. Only 3% of all GamCares calls are from people with a bingo-problem.

Bingo has also seen its following rise thanks to the abundance of online games, such as Butlers Bingo. With more people than ever able to simply play the game from their own living room, or even their beds, bingo is starting to become something of a phenomenon – an it’s not the old folks who are driving up the numbers either. There’s a whole new tech savvy generation of bingo fans.
